Daniel Hannan… to the respectable Mr. Gordon Brown

March 25, 2009

At the moment, the most watched video on YouTube in UK is a speech by Daniel Hannan, a conservative MP for SE England. It is a great piece of oratory and well worth the 4 minutes of viewing time, if nothing else. Needless to say, Mr. Hannan’s gutsy and calm delivery is very impressive, and more importantly, it is the openness of dialog in the UK parliament that grabs your attention.

Since I am not tuned in to UK politics, I have no visibility to the claims he makes.  But we do need a lot more of this at home from our conservative friends — to match Mr. Obama’s skills — and engage in a meaningful and rational dialog.

This guy is my new hero—and not only because he looks freakishly like me. (Seriously, he could be my long-lost, slightly older clone.)

A correction: He is an MEP – he is a Member of the European Parliament, which sits in Strassbourg, He is not a member of the House of Commons. Incidentally, being an MEP is a great sinecure, and the European Parliament is a useless adjunct to a politically purposeless organisation.
